Most pieces will need at least some sanding with very fine sandpaper. Some pieces will require more sanding than others. After sanding to uniform smoothness, apply first coat of Danish oil with rags such as cotton sheeting, old pillowcases, or old sheets. The first coat should uniformly cover the piece of furniture and should soak in or “dry” in 3 or 4 hours. Oil should be applied to one section at a time.
** IMPORTANT **
When applying the first coat, be careful not to drip oil on parts of the piece that are not being finished immediately. Drops that sit on a unfinished section will cause spots on the finished piece.
Wait 24 hours after applying the first coat. Apply second coat moderately, (not as heavy as the first coat) again covering the piece to uniform color. Wait 24 hours again. Wood surfaces should feel slightly rough due to the oil “raising” the grain of the wood. The third coat is most important to obtain a smooth and finished texture. Apply oil to lightly coat one section (i.e. top or side of one piece.) Using 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper, sand the oiled section while still wet in the direction of the grain of the wood until smooth. Wipe section dry with old rags or paper towels and proceed to the next section.
Approximately 2 hours after “wet sanding” wipe entire piece down again to remove any shiny spots of oil that may appear. Wipe down again 4 to 5 hours later. After 24 hours the piece should be ready for use. If polyurethane top coat is desired allow 48 hours drying time before applying poly finish.
